I'm a huge Buffy fan and have watched the series several times over the years so of course when I was offered a copy of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Picture Book I couldn't resist. This really is the cutest little picture book and it's a great way to introduce another new generation to a series so many adults already love.

The story doesn't stick strictly to cannon which is absolutely fine in my opinion, it wouldn't exactly be child friendly if it did now would it! What it does is take us back in t

This book had the potential, considering its source material, to provide a really powerful story for a young girl (or boy) to read. While picture books are often simplified for younger readers to absorb, they should still tell a good story and this one really lacked for me. I'll admit, it did get my geek at the end, as I raced to identify every villain from Buffy drawn into the scene. For that reason, this book is more for the crazy nut job fan like myself.

Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series premiered in 1997 and has remained popular ever since. I came to it late and am still working my way through the DVD box set. It is my go to show when I need some light entertainment because watching a group of young people fighting the vampires, demons and forces of darkness that roam their neighbourhood gives me hope, even when it does get a bit silly. Our real world is full of forces of darkness in human form and maybe they too can be defeated ...more

This takes the Buffy story during the TV series, but forgets there was movie (like many fans do). This time all of Sunnydale is there (Willow, Xander, Giles) but as if Buffy was an 8-year-old girl instead of the teen she was in the series. Actually it starts off as with Buffy "now" and then flashes back to being eight. The illustrations are funny and colorful and very modern. The fan will recognize the monsters in the closet (even the "good" monsters). The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird was m ...more

What most reviewers don’t remember is that this is a children’s book. They want to criticize the fact that Buffy didn’t know Willow or Xander as a child. Or the fact that all the monsters that try to kill Buffy just end up partying with her as a child. It’s a children’s book people! Your child probably hadn’t even watched Buffy and therefore won’t know the difference.

That being said, I love the cute story line with all the little hidden details and items from the show. The illustrations were co

This book is so darn cute! I'm sure only fans of the show will really appreciate all the neat stuff about it, but it's still a nice children's book regardless about facing your fears. I loved the artwork and the fact that Buffy had every demon from the show in her closet.

This is the cutest thing in the world. If you love Buffy you'll adore this and making squealy sounds as you read it and then want to buy numerous copies for all of the small people you know to share the Buffy joy.

Okay, this book is adorable!

Buffy was my absolute favourite show growing up and while this book may not be canon, there are enough nostalgic easter eggs to keep the grown-ups happy while reading the cute story to children.

Oh, and the illustrations are beautiful too!

This was cute in a very basic way. I'm not sure kids would appreciate it or understand the background if someone didn't explain to them about the older Buffy. It seems to be more for adults to reminisce about Buffy as a kid. I enjoyed it, but not sure kids will. If you ignore what you know about Buffy, it's a cute book about it being okay to be afraid, but showing you that there's no reason for it.

The pictures are great, but this book is a disaster. It's obviously designed for Buffy fans to purchase for tiny kids that they know, but fans will not find anything familiar except the character and place names (and depictions of the actors). Franchise or not, some stories aren't meant for preschool-aged kids: it's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, not Buffy the Demon Soother. gah.

The pictures are great and the story is kid friendly. But I wouldn't really recommend unless you are a huge Buffy fan, and it's mainly for you. The 'monsters' are sort of friendly looking, but they are all baddies from the show, so some are kind of horrifying. (Guy with no skin, anyone?)
Cutesy, but more for adults with nostalgia for the show than kids.

This adorable children’s book imagines our intrepid TV slayer as if she’d come to Sunnydale as a little girl rather than a troubled teenager. We meet her good friends Xander and Willow as they have sleepovers, complete with popcorn and dancing. Xander pours over comic books while little Willow gleefully handles a book of spells.

While I liked the story, the illustrations are brightly colored and simple, in the style of many kid’s books. There’s not much to recommend them or distinguish them from

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

When Buffy was only right, she was afraid of the sounds coming from her closet in the dark. With some teaching from Giles, her school librarian, and support from her friends Willow and Xander, she might be able to conquer her fears and make some new friends.

Of course you have to ignore the inconsistencies from the series – because Buffy fans will

While I thought the book was charming and an adorable way to introduce the characters, I think the only group it is going to appeal to are the fans. I tried to imagine giving this book to my neighbor's son for Halloween and decided I'm going to have to clear it with his parents first. Not that there is anything wrong with the book exactly, but it doesn't have the universal appeal many books for kids around Halloween have.

The only other thing I question is the monsters. I would think it would be

Not as cute of a book as I thought it would be, but still a cute book.
8 year old Buffy has a sleepover with her friends Willow and Xander (even thought she didn't know them when she was 8, but whatever, its a kids book).
They hear strange noises coming from the closet. At first they are scared to check it out, but Giles (the librarian at their elementary school) tells Buffy that she's a slayer and that she can take on anything. So the friends have another sleepover and this time when they hear n

At first, I wasn't sure as it went way off canon, but this is a perfect book for kids. I love that it's inscribed to all the tough girls who are afraid of the dark, and when I read that part, I add boys, too, because Buffy isn't just for girls. That aside, I love the story of younger Buffy (and friends) facing their fears and confronting the monsters and realizing that the monsters aren't so scary after all. It's a nice message about anxiety. My son is two, so he says "poof" when Buffy slays a v ...more

This was the cutest picture book. It is the perfect way to introduce a child into the world of Buffy and when they are older force them to watch all the episodes. I loved looking for the little details that would make any Buffy fan smile in delight, or in my case grin like a dork and make a giggle sound. You see familiar faces of people Buffy goes up against in the show and her little pig stuffed animal, Mr. Gordo! The illustrations by Kim Smith are so adorable. This book has two distinct audiences: young readers and Buffy fans. It has plenty to offer both!

Buffy fans will see familiar characters and monsters. For the young readers, it introduces a tough young girl who, in spite of that, has an all too common fear: fear of the dark. It also sneaks in little asides to help them pronounce names like "Giles" and "Xander" on their own!

Definitely recommend to Buffy fans with or without children (I personally fall into the latter category!), or parents whose c

I didn't know what to expect from a Buffy picture book but I requested it from my library anyway. The references to the show and seeing The Scooby Gang as younger versions of themselves made my geeky heart pitter-patter. But I'm not sure my kids appreciated it much and it didn't suddenly make them fall in love with these characters. And while I get that it's a picture book, I saw no reason to include pronunciations for Giles and Xander's name. Nobody's childhood trauma ever included mispronounci ...more

This was a really cute book! The only reason it's not a 5 star is because it's not consistent with the Buffy-verse. Buffy did not move to Sunnydale till high school, so of course she wasn't there in elementary school, nor did she know Willow and Xander.

I did really love the illustrations and the callbacks from things in the tv series.

I would definitely purchase any other Buffy childrens books that come out in this vein.

Age: Preschool-Kindergarten
Emotions: Being brave

Clearly suitable for moms and dads wanting to spread the Buffy love to their kids but also for the uninitiated. Told by her school librarian (who apparently worked at her elementary school, too), Buffy is informed to just "be brave." Although in disbelief, this is just what she does, in true Buffy fashion (as unbelievable of a storyline as it is).

Of course it’s getting 5 stars!! This is the first kids book I’ve been genuinely excited about. Buffy is a show that has meant so much to me, so much so that it will forever be my all-time favourite tv show. When I first saw this book this morning at work, I teared up a bit (yes I’m an emotional mess!). It was so adorable as well!! I’m all for introducing kids and people of all ages to my favourite superhero; Buffy Summers!!

As a cohost of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer podcast (Get Slayed, go listen to it on iTunes, Stitcher, and Googleplay!) I am often forced to explain Buffy to people who don't really know what it is.

Sometimes those people are my little nieces.

While this book doesn't follow the logic or rules of the show (which is a complaint I saw a lot of), it is true to the essence of Buffy. Brave kids take on monsters even when it is scary. It doesn't really matter when she met Willow and Xander and the age com

Totally sweet, with lots of cameos (speaking of Sweet) and some subtle fourth-wall hijinx (uhh... why is Willow telling the reader how to pronounce Xander if he just introduced himself?) — long-time fans will delightedly recognize props and locales, and first-time fans will discover the power of courage and friendship.

Baby Buffy faces closet monster. Cute.

I like the little word bubble asides that explain how to pronounce "Giles" and "Xander."

Purists may get tripped up on the fact that it does not exactly follow Buffy canon, seeing as she didn't move to Sunnydale or meet Willow and Xander until high school.
