Once upon a time there existed a version of our faith worth living and dying for, something the world found irresistible. Men and women pursued it at the risk of persecution, job loss, and eviction from their homes, temples, and society.

What if we actually followed their lead? Perhaps it would change how we read the Bible. Maybes it would help us understand our own faith

I find this to be a hard book to review, and end up giving it the rare 5th star in an effort to foster conversation about it and its message.

Andy writes in a very informal conversational manner. I can 'hear' him while reading this.

The primary take-away is that we need to change our approach in teaching and preaching away from all things Old Testament [or his terminology, Hebrew Scripture] and focus entirely on Jesus' and the apostles teachings and the event of Jesus' resurrection. It took me t

This is a watershed volume on the foundation of the Christian faith. It may appear controversial to some, but in fact it is simply a return to the earliest version of Christianity, and the easiest version to share and defend. This book raises so many great questions for the church and church leaders. I honestly believe that in 50 years this book will be viewed as a turning point for the evangelical church in the West.

Andy is on to something here. 'The Bible says so' wasn't good for me and it's not good for the generations who have come behind me. I have loved history all my life. I have always looked at the Bible as a group of books and letters God's people wrote to one another to guide their belief, to stay the course, to connect us to the One and Only as a book of faith, but especially a book of historical experiences. The Christian faith is based on an historical event which is why we have to share it, te ...more

Stanley voices a concern that we should take seriously. The current state of apologetics in the west is listing badly. Christians have terrible arguments for why they believe what they believe. Something should be done about that. His conclusion though has been tried before: cut away, reverently and lovingly, the hard parts of Scripture to make it more accessible. German liberal theologians did it two-hundreds years ago when liberal Christianity was born. Now those denominations that embraced th ...more

Quite possibly the most important book for Christians and Christian leaders in this modern era.

Andy writes a thought-provoking book to lead the church into some much needed self-examination. Reaching an increasingly post-Christian culture will require a different approach than previous generations. Understanding that post-Christians (which 48% and rising) of Americans qualify as, are people who have rejected or walked away from Christianity. It’s not that they don’t know about it or never had any faith. They know it (or at least a faulty version of it) and they have rejected it. Teaching ...more

I have sometimes criticized Stanley’s seeker sensitive methods. To mock one of his book titles, I found him more Wide than Deep.
    IRRESISTIBLE changes that.
Stanley believes that many have left the faith unnecessarily because of the error of “blending” the Old and New Covenants, and an “all or nothing” acceptance of the whole Bible, as necessary to the faith.
To summarize, he tries to reorient the Faith, and the Bible around its proper center: Christ Crucified and Resurrected.

In "Irresistible," Andy Stanley challenges Christians to live as New Covenant Christians - ones that live by one command: love people the way God through Christ has loved you. Nothing he writes here is new, necessarily, especially if you're familiar with his teaching at Northpoint Church, but it is all an incredible reminder for those who are following Jesus.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to ponder the way we tend to share our faith as I read this book. I found it challenging in many ways and inspiring. My biggest takeaway is the question I’d like to continually ask of myself, “what does love require of me?”; and to change my terminology to quote authors of books of the Bible rather than saying, “the Bible says...”

This is the game-changer book that Christianity shouldn't need. The information here isn't new but the packaging and conclusions are unfortunately so foreign to our Western Christian Worldview that we need to redefine our faith and the way we see scripture. It is going to be my gifting book this year to anyone and everyone who will take a copy.

Bold, thoughtful, well written and researched, worth a look especially for anyone who is grieved by the life changing message of Jesus being shrouded by the “resistible” nature of the Church in a post Christian culture. While the truths excavated in the book are not new, the approach is refreshingly controversial.

I love this book and I’m sure you will too, no matter what (or if) you believe!

Andy is not necessarily compelling anyone to believe differently. Instead, he asks those who claim to be Christian to consider leaving some things behind that are unnecessary and even encumber our ability to fully experience the abundant life Jesus offers. He’s asking us to reconsider the church's approach.

Irresistible is one of the most radical books I have ever read! I have been in church my entire life yet I have never heard Jesus, the Bible, or the church explained the way Andy Stanley explains them. Wow. If you’re looking for a good and challenging book, read Irresistible!!! It’s amazing!!!!!

This book is long but worth reading every page!!
Why has it taken so long to put such powerful words in the hands of people?! I don’t know but I am certainly grateful for this.
